![]() ![]() Did Tennessee fight for the Union or Confederate On June 8, 1861, Tennessee seceded from the Union, the 11th and final state to join the Confederacy. After a close vote on June 1, 1796, Tennessee became the 16th state of the Union. But their regard for the freedmen ended there: Tennesseans strongly resisted measured to extend suffrage to former slaves, as well as other measures to make them equal under the law. Tennessee was the first Federal territory to apply for statehood to Congress. Tennessee was quick to outlaw slavery and adopt the 14th Amendment that formally freed all slaves - both preconditions for rejoining the Union. It would be the only one for two years, until 1868 when Arkansas became the second. In the end, the federal government permitted Southern states to rejoin the Union as equals with the Northern states. On this day, July 24, in 1866 Tennessee became the first Confederate state to reenter the Union. The state, which was the first to return to the Union after the war. Nevertheless, Tennessee seceded only reluctantly: it was the last state to leave, the first state to come back to the Union after the Confederate surrender.
